Blanca is 19 years old, and in the fourth grade of Primary School. She is determined to continue her education, in the face of almost impossible odds. First, her age. She has had to miss much school in the past to help care for her younger siblings, and one can only imagine what it is like for her to sit in a class with 10 and 11 year olds. But that doesn't stop here. She is also a woman fighting for education in a country that often deems women unworthy of this expense. Finally, she lives in extreme poverty in an isolated area in the flatlands.
Blanca's mother is a widow who we met three years ago when Dick Rutgers brought her and her younger daughter into the malnutrition project at Hermano Pedro. Three of the six children in this family are in school, while Angel, the oldest son, works when he can to support the family.
